Today was field day for my eldest. Her first one. She was very excited for a number of reasons, including being able to wear a cool T-shirt to school and getting to compete on the blue team with some of her friends. And it was a great day for it, not too hot, with the sun peeking out every now and then.
Her dad and I would chat with her about how field day is just about having fun. It doesn’t matter if you win or you fall, you pick yourself back up again and keep trying. This is the first time she is really ‘competing’ as a team but her nature as a perfectionist is she wants to be great at everything. And with that comes great highs when she gets it but also some unbelievable pouting when she doesn’t. It’s a process that I know she’ll grasp more and more. On top of it all, she isn’t the most athletic of the bunch, she takes after her momma that way.
Overall, it was a great experience for her. I think she had fun. She definitely didn’t like ‘losing’ some of the events, but as many were relays, she wasn’t able to fully grasp the concept that the team’s success is determined by the cumulative efforts of the team, not just her alone. She loved the cornhole toss, the football hurdle, and the hippity hop. I think she would rather forget about the sack race 🙂 My personal fav was the tug of war. It was absolutely hilarious watching kindergarteners try to pull on the rope. It was turning sideways at one point. Priceless.
