There is really no way to write a post like this without sounding dramatic and cheesy. Suffice it to say, I am just going to share my perspective of why updating your family photos and taking regular pictures of your children is important…not just for you, but for them. Maybe something that I write will resonate with you, maybe you will want to book a session with me, or maybe you will just whip out your iPhone more often and take some pictures. Any of these would be a-ok with me. But of course, I’m partial to #2 and I hope to hear from you.
I think it is pre-programmed in children to love looking at pictures. I know I did as a child, and I can see the trend continue with my own children. My daughter adores looking at all of the photo albums, and even as a 5 year old can remember bits and pieces of things…her memory jogged by the photo. The pictures are also a way to keep connected with family who live farther away than we would like. I take a picture of my kids almost every day. And each year, they each get a photo album filled with memories. And I get a way to keep them with me. These tangible memories are a pick-me-up when I’m down. They are a conversation starter. They bring comfort and joy.
But that is only half the story. What about me, the mom? Or Dad, who is always working when I happen to get the camera out? Do I give my children tangible memories filled with images that only tell part of the story? No, I cannot. This is why it is important to connect with someone you trust, connect as a family, and let a photographer film who you are.
Hiring a photographer for children and family portraits is a gift that keeps on giving. Here are a few of my reasons for saying that.
- The prints and albums are archival quality, with inks that will not fade or yellow for decades.
- Your children will be able to see your family as you were….the home you lived in, the room they helped decorate, the art projects hanging on the walls that are no longer in existence, the special park you loved to play in, the swingset where they learned to pump their legs
- Your children will be able to see their mom and dad being silly, being happy, being in love – and they (and you!) will have the visual forever
- You are placing an importance on cementing these memories for your kids…and they will turn around and do the same for your grandchildren.
- And one more – the pressure is off! Send to the relatives every year for the holidays!! 🙂
I’m sure there are more…but you get the picture (ha!) I think. If you enjoy my style, I would love to connect with you. Some of my favorite sessions can be found here and here. Let’s chat about filming your children and your family. Because at the end of the day, memories do fade, but these images will tell your story.
