In today’s day and age, getting noticed isn’t always about having the best product – it is about networking and marketing your best self. Showing professional quality images on your website, print materials, and social media demonstrates your competitive edge to consumers. Your brand identity is how your clients will learn to identify you. So, make it easier by investing in a consistent and professional visual brand photography package. This eliminates the need for stock photography and creates a stronger adaptation of your brand into your digital media and online presence.
The first step towards a great head shot is selecting the right photographer. You’ve probably only spoken to your photographer briefly over the phone or during your initial meeting. Did he or she listen to your ideas, and did you get a good sense they have a firm handle on the look you are going for? Were they easy to talk to? These are important points, because if you feel confident and comfortable that you are in good, capable hands then that will absolutely come through in your photographs. Read on for some important tips.
When you decide on a photographer and are gearing up for your shoot, there are a few tips to keep in mind.
- Bring plenty of wardrobe choices. Tops, sweaters, jackets, shirts, ties…bring all the variety! Be sure to include formal and maybe slightly less formal options, because the ending results might surprise you.
- Along that line, stay away from large and loud patterns. There are ways to add elements of fun and your personality without having them compete with your face.
- Make sure everything is ironed. Wrinkles in clothing show up even more so in camera. Bring along a lint brush.
- Women, professional hair and make-up can make a world of difference in a photograph. Your photographer can suggest reputable vendors who are well versed in natural hair and make-up that is camera ready.
- Men, be sure to bring a hair brush.
- Drink lots of water and get plenty of rest so that your skin and eyes look their best. Yes, there is Photoshop. But, you’ll feel so much better when it’s natural.
At the start of the session, the photographer should go over what you have already discussed regarding your needs and vision, and then wardrobe is usually discussed. The actual photography portion of the head shot session doesn’t take that long. Be open minded to poses, wardrobe and backdrops if you can, because you never know what you might prefer. I always stop about mid-way through and we chat about the images we have taken so far. This allows you to relax a bit more once you see the photographs, and I can gauge if I’m succeeding or not in delivering your vision.
Finally, the images are selected and appropriately re-touched. Usually, multiple looks are selected so you have something to use in print materials, online, and social media that are all a bit different.
