What is the best way to create a head shot image that you love?
Lighting also plays a large role. Depending on the client or the situation, both natural and studio lighting is used to create the images. Fill light is applied where necessary to ensure that unsightly shadows are minimized. This allows me to create looks that are airy or dramatic, depending on the vibe you are going for. As the shoot progresses, and I get to know you a bit better, I work hard to bring out your personality while I’m photographing you. I do this with wardrobe, posing…and plain simple conversation. And I’m also studying you, looking at how the light falls on your face, to be able to utilize the best angles to create the best possible image. I also want you to engage with the camera, and the more expressive your face, the more successful the portrait will be. Blank, dreamy, or pensive expressions are okay for some portraits, but not head shots. This doesn’t mean you are laughing or smiling in each image, but that your expression is strong and has purpose.
Take a look at my more recent session. {D} is going to be featured in a print magazine, and the editors desired a variety of different looks to use. Each one is strong and expressive, and this client was thrilled.
